AquaBioNets International Summer School on Sustainable Aquaculture

The Interreg Euro-MED project AquaBioNets is organising the International Summer School on Sustainable Aquaculture, taking place from 6 to 8 October 2026 at Porto Conte Ricerche, a research centre located in Tramariglio, near Alghero, Sardinia, Italy.

The event will bring together stakeholders from the aquaculture sector to exchange knowledge, discuss current challenges and explore sustainable solutions for the future of aquaculture.

Who is it for?

The Summer School is intended for:

• SMEs, producers and other aquaculture industry actors;
• researchers and academic institutions;
• public authorities and policymakers;
• civil society organisations;
• associations and stakeholder networks;
• other actors interested in sustainable aquaculture and the blue economy.

While summer schools are often linked to academic and training contexts, this event is designed as a multi-stakeholder event, with a strong focus on connecting industry and academia.

Main topics

The programme will address key topics related to sustainable aquaculture, including:

• sustainability challenges in the aquaculture sector;
• environmental impacts and microplastics;
• traditional aquaculture nets and sustainable alternatives;
• biodegradable and biocompatible materials;
• testing and validation of new materials;
• economic aspects of sustainability in aquaculture;
• regulatory challenges;
• cooperation between industry, research and policy.

Participation and registration

Registration is now open! Participation in the ISS is free of charge. The event is financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme through the AquaBioNets project. Participants are kindly asked to arrange and cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

Interested participants will be able to choose their preferred form of participation:

• in-person participation in Tramariglio / Alghero, or
• online participation for the first day of the Summer School.

During the registration process, participants will also be invited to indicate whether they would like to actively contribute to the programme as speakers. Those interested will be able to propose a presentation topic related to sustainable aquaculture, sector challenges, innovation needs, practical experience, research results or other relevant themes.

In-person participants will also have the opportunity to prepare a poster for the poster exhibition planned on 8 October. The poster does not have to be a scientific poster only — it can also be a visual presentation of participants’ work, current challenges, good practices, innovation ideas or other topics related to aquaculture and sustainability.

In-person participation is limited due to venue and organisational capacity. If the number of applications exceeds the maximum capacity, the organisers will carry out a selection process.
