🌊 Building Mission connections through water-focused solutions
Both AquaBioNets and WATERVILL are part of the Innovative Sustainable Economy Mission, and although we approach sustainability from different angles, we are clearly connected by one essential element: water.
WATERVILL is an Interreg Euro-MED project addressing water scarcity in rural and mountainous areas of the Mediterranean. By combining smart technologies, nature-based solutions, and community-led governance, the project works to modernise outdated water supply systems, reduce water losses, and strengthen climate resilience in regions increasingly affected by droughts and climate change.
AquaBioNets, on the other hand, focuses on sustainability in aquaculture through the introduction of biodegradable aquaculture nets, aiming to reduce plastic pollution while supporting a more sustainable and competitive aquaculture sector.
Different sectors, different challenges — but a shared concern for water and its role in healthy ecosystems and resilient local economies.
A special highlight of the meeting was the time dedicated to the AquaBioNets project presentation. We would like to warmly thank the WATERVILL team for giving us the space to present our project, our goals, and the path we are taking to achieve them through research, testing, and close cooperation with stakeholders along the value chain.
The project was presented by Marija Koričan from the Lead Partner, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, with support from Ivana Mihaljević (Mreža znanja).
Beyond the presentations, the kick-off was a great opportunity to meet colleagues working under the same Mission, exchange first ideas, and strengthen the feeling that we are all part of the same Euro-MED community. It was also very nice to catch up in person with Guillaume Javourez, Project Officer from the Interreg Euro-MED Joint Secretariat, who follows both AquaBioNets and WATERVILL.

Different projects, different angles — but one Mission, and water at the heart of it all.
Good luck, WATERVILL team, and hope to meet again!
