AquaBioNets is officially underway! On June 10–11 in Šibenik, Croatia, partners from across the Mediterranean gathered for a two-day kick-off packed with insights, plans, and purpose – all focused on making aquaculture more sustainable through real-world collaboration.

The project is up and running! The AquaBioNets project launched with a successful kick-off meeting in the beautiful coastal town of Šibenik, Croatia. Partners from across Mediterranean came together – some in person, some online – for two productive days of discussion, planning, and connection.
We were glad to welcome our Project Officer and colleagues from the Governance projects team, along with our partners, who brought a wealth of experience and motivation to the table.
Laying the Groundwork
Day one was all about getting to know each other and diving into the heart of the project – our goals, intervention logic, work packages, and upcoming activities. We had in-depth discussions on our expected deliverables and results, and one thing was clear from the start: making aquaculture more sustainable is a shared priority across all our countries. This partnership brings together the right mix of knowledge, passion, and local relevance to make a real difference.
A big thank-you goes to Matija Bumbak from Platforma22, our Associated Organisation, for sharing his firsthand experience as a local mussel farmer – and for hosting us at Platforma’s mussel farm just beneath the Šibenik Bridge. Seeing those baby mussels and two small noble pen shells reminded us exactly why we’re doing this work. It was a meaningful moment that made our shared mission feel even more real and urgent.
Looking Ahead
On the second day, we held our first Steering Committee meeting and went over key project management topics – administration, reporting, communication – and wrapped up with a concrete action plan for the months ahead.
We’re excited to keep the momentum going and work together toward more sustainable, biodegradable solutions for the aquaculture sector.
More updates coming soon – stay tuned!
